I’d like to think (and
the sooner the better!)
of a cybernetic meadow
where mammals and computers
live together in mutually
programming harmony
like pure water
touching clear sky.

I like to think
 (right now, please!)
of a cybernetic forest
filled with pines and electronics
where deer stroll peacefully
past computers
as if they were flowers
with spinning blossoms.

I like to think
 (it has to be!)
of a cybernetic ecology
where we are free of our labors
and joined back to nature,
returned to our mammal brothers and sisters,
and all watched over
by machines of loving grace.

<del>merge “blackberries” & “blackberry bushes”, clean up other category names</del>

ability to add data from any city

make Portland be the default in input box, but be changeable

drop down of cities with 5+ sources on the Browse view

focus is on Portland/NW to strengthen project, but data collection from anywhere shouldn’t be restricted

NewFeatureIdeas

Have a meeting in November*

Add guestbook

Add front page survey

Julie is making a survey from surveymonkey

Add statistics box with:

How many different contributers

Who has added the most sources

Add more helpful Error Handling

Faulty addresses give 500 error

Add confirmation page when submitting sources

Show map to confirm location, make “clickable” to get exact coordinates.

How about a feature to let us know if a listing has been submitted or approved by the homeowner, or a way to let people know that they don’t need to ask permission to harvest.

Make possible for group/org maps. Give city-specific logins for less public maps, or at least extra features to be under their management.

Ability to submit GPS cords instead of address.

Easy form for submitting multiple sources, import GPS data file from handheld, etc.

Submit sources by text message using Twitter

Resources database section on main site with data linked to individual sources in that category.

Ability to submit images and audio? for individual sources

Make map view smarter:

When multiple sources have the same address (lat/long)

Try subtracting random small values from the identical lat/longs

Clustering for zoomed-out views

Since the encyclopedia will be wiki-style, that means the “edibles will be editable”!

One page with search & browse: smaller map & list of available categories & seasons.

One search box for addresses, intersections, source types, resource data (preserving, etc.), lat & long ?

Use a standardized climate categorization rubric from something like Western Gardening, etc. (5 for the NW & Germany, 9 for the SW & dry areas, etc.). When a new city/regional project is created, they will select there climate category and source data will eventually have a away to know what is apx. in season when.

Wiki resource database should have history with patrolling that should be patrolled by the region the source belongs to.

Should be easy view of recently added sources with “flag for revision/deletion” option.

Some way to select your city / region:

Drop down box with available cities at top of page.

Craiglist style subdomains (seattle.urbanedibles.org)

World map on front page (with clustered source count bubbles: portland, 210)

Detect region by IP

Bookmark/share button

<!-- AddThis Button BEGIN -->
<script type="text/javascript">addthis_pub = 'urbanedibles';</script>
<a href="http://www.addthis.com/bookmark.php" onmouseover="return addthis_open(this, '', '[URL]', '[TITLE]')" onmouseout="addthis_close()" onclick="return addthis_sendto()"><img src="http://s9.addthis.com/button1-share.gif" width="125" height="16" border="0" alt="" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/152/addthis_widget.js"></script>
<!-- AddThis Button END -->

...

Fallen Fruit

Public Fruit is the concept behind Fallen Fruit, an activist art project that has begun mapping public fruit in Los Angeles, CA. They encourage everyone to harvest, plant and sample public fruit, which is what they call all fruit on or overhanging public spaces such as sidewalks, streets or parking lots.

Amity Works

Amity Works is a group out of Oakland, CA. They maintain a storefront, a series of free publications, a website and a crop-sharing program called the Big Backyard. The Big Backyard is formed around a pushcart that they use to collect surplus fruit from neighborhood yards, and then donate to the storefront or re-distribute in the form of collective preserves and marmalades.

Nonprofit Technology Network

Plants For a Future

A searchable database of 7,000 useful plants with a focus on perenials. “There are over 20,000 species of edible plants in the world yet fewer than 20 species now provide 90% of our food. Large areas of land devoted to single crops increase dependence upon intervention of chemicals and intensive control methods with the added threat of chemical resistant insects and new diseases. The changing world climate greatly affecting cultivation indicates a greater diversity is needed.”

NewFeatureIdeas2

Option to add email address in comments so that users could answer questions about location plants.

Ability to view the website in many languages. Once the edible has been chosen from the drop-down menu (or added), then (through programming code) we would enable the user to make a language choice. Front page/ Ethics page would have to be manually translated.

Idea of adding food banks, shelter areas, water sources (public drinking fountains, hidden ponds and such) to the map (from caves and bushes to specialized shelters).

Add a blog where with a translation tool integrated in the blog, all posts would show up in the language chosen, creating a seamless experience for the end user. Blog could also be used to separate and assign tasks from the Feature Ideas to willing members and to discuss new ideas and integration solutions!

The blog could also expand on comments for each area, so if a Google Map Marker has a code, i.e #167, then users could blog about #167, would be even more relevant in the case if shelter areas are added or for edibles that are more difficult to access.

Add to Ethics page samples of letters for inquiring about local law regarding picking in school yards, plants that overhand public property, natural reserve parks, large spaces such as in the countryside.

Decide if we want to add this group to MySpace, Facebook and other social networking sites.

Bookmark/share button

<!-- AddThis Button BEGIN -->
